Total global electric vehicle sales (excluding China) reached 5.648 million units from January to December 2023, a growth of 31.7 %, according to research firm SNE Research.
Among them, Tesla’s sales amounted to 1.205 million units, a year-on-year increase of 37.8%. It mainly benefited from the stable sales of its flagship Model 3 / Y and the start of deliveries of some refreshed Model 3 models, with a market share of 21.3%.
Volkswagen (including Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda) sold about 770,000 units, ranking second with a 13.6% market share. The Volkswagen Group saw strong sales of the Volkswagen ID series, Audi Q4, Q8 E-Tron, and Skoda ENYAQ.
The third place is the Stellantis Group, which includes the Fiat 500e, Peugeot e-208, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and Grand pure electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), sold a total of 562,000 units. Market share 9.9%.
The Hyundai Motor Group focused on the IONIQ 5/6, EV6, Niro, and Kona, with sales of around 560,000 units, up 10.4 percent year-on-year, and a market share of around 9.9 percent.
The BMW Group is fifth with 426,000 units sold and a market share of 7.6 percent, up 20.9 percent year-on-year.
By region, in 2023, excluding China, Europe leads in electric vehicle registrations, with a 55.3% share, followed by North America with a 29.4% share. In North America, Tesla leads the market with over 710,000 units sold. In Asia, South Korea’s Hyundai leads, followed by Nissan, Mitsubishi, and others.
After gaining a foothold in its home market in China, BYD has been expanding its market share outside of China, with overseas sales of more than 112,000 units in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 568.9 percent, SNE Research said.
